Arriving in the Netherlands: what comes first?

Municipal registration, BSN and everyday life: an agenda to prepare before arrival.

A residence decision does not finish the relocation process. Sequencing connected tasks helps you transition into work, a home and family life.

Before travelling

Check appointment availability and the document list with the municipality where you will live. Confirm address and identity requirements and how family documents must be presented. Do not assume translations or legalisation are unnecessary.

Municipal registration and BSN

People planning to live in the Netherlands for more than four months must register with their municipality within five days of arrival. This involves BRP registration and the BSN process. Prepare the appointment before travelling.

Make everyday life work

Put DigiD, health insurance, payments and schooling on a separate list. Requirements and timing depend on circumstances, so use the relevant institution’s guidance.

Track the first steps

Record the owner, information needed and next action for each task. Agree on a secure way to share documents instead of attaching identity documents or personal numbers to a general first-contact email.

PREPARE FOR A CONVERSATION

Build your preparation list.

  • Municipality appointment and document check
  • Address and arrival plan
  • BSN and DigiD agenda
  • Health insurance and family needs
  • Employment-start coordination
